Notes: I live in South Australia and I am researching my great grandmother Eliza Barrington Butler and her parents Thomas Butler and Margaret Theresa Lee who were living in Castle Street, St Peter le Bailey, at the time of the 1851 and 1861 census of Oxford. Thomas was the Resident Officer and Margaret was the Matron of the Anti Mendacity Society. Thomas and Margaret had two daughters- Emma Born in 1837 in Middlesex and my great grandmother Eliza Barrington Butler born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847. Thomas was born around 1804 in Kidlington and was in the 7th Hussars until 1841.He may have been the son of Joseph and Elizabeth. Emma Butler married Thomas Carter in 1858 and I have a lot of information on her descendants. Eliza Barrington Butler married William John Symonds in Oxford in 1872 and emigrated to Australia in 1874. Emma and Thomas Carter are buried in St Scepulchre Cemetery, Oxford. Eliza told some fanciful stories about her background and I'd love to find out more about her family, particularly where the Barrington family name came from. I'd also be interested to know if Thomas and Margaret(who I believe married in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1827) had any other children as they were married for 10 years before the birth of Emma.
