Notes: William WALL according to my history was born in Oxford or Oxfordshire in 1767, parents unknown. He was a carver, gilder and artist. He married Lucy HARDYMAN on 2 Dec 1811 in Warwickshire but is listed as living in Oxford and was a member of the Parish of St. Marys. He appears to be a non-conformist and his three children (William Coventry, Sarah A and Richard S.) born in Oxford are listed as baptized there. Family oral history also states his mother ran a school for girls and that that is where he met his wife, Lucy, who was about 25 years younger than William. About 1820 they immigrated to the U.S., settling in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, and later Pittsburgh. He made his living carving tombstones, some of which I have documented. I have no further information about him or his family in England. I have him well documented in the U.S. after 1823. He had three other children born in the U.S. (Alfred S, Helen and Leander Theodore). His two sons, William Coventry WALL and Alfred S WALL, and a grandson, Alfred Bryan WALL, became well know artists and painters in Western Pennsylvania.
