WALTER | 1600-1780 | Northmoor, Churchill, Shipton under Wychwood |
Notes: I was born in Norfolk. My parents and immediate family were Londoners and grew up in Holborn. My interest in the family tree arose from reading Admiral Ansons circumnavigation of the world. The book was written (1740) by his Chaplain - Richard WALTER who hailed from the Holborn area. The book was first published by a relation in Charing Cross - Michael WALTER. Michael also started to produce a newssheet called “The Thunderer”. He became the first editor of The Times newspaper and the WALTER family ran it until 1905. Out of curiosity I have been trying to find a connection - so far without success. But my research shows many of my forebears are buried at Northmoor Church. I found a Richard WALTER who married Sarah WINDOWS in 1777 at Shipton under Wychwood. He died in 1786 and is buried at Northmoor. There is on the website of the Oxfordshire Family History Society a transcript of a will by a Richard WALTER dated 1660 - he was described as a shepherd at Churchill. I am wondering if he may be a forebear but cannot make a connection. There is another Richard buried at Northmoor in 1662. Could this be the same shepherd?
